The different types of roofing materials for your roof

When it comes to roofing there are a variety of materials that can be used, but what are they and what is the difference? We understand that when it comes to choosing a roof for your home or business, that there are many things to consider. How long will it last? What type of maintenance is required? Will this look good on my building? These are the types of questions that come to mind when choosing a type of roofing materials. Here we will explore the most common roofing materials and their characteristics.

Asphalt Shingles

The most common type of roofing material found on homes across Calgary is asphalt shingles. This is because they are very affordable, easy to install, and extremely durable. They also come in a variety of styles ranging from traditional designs with wood grain patterns to modern, designer styles that resemble metal roofs. The main disadvantage to these shingles is that they are prone to leaking if not properly installed or maintained.

Wood Shingles

Wooden shingles are once again becoming popular amongst homeowners for their unique style and rustic look. However, they can be expensive when compared with asphalt tiles due to the cost of the materials used in making them as well as the man hours required in maintaining them. Though they do add a certain charm to any home, if installed incorrectly they can also be prone to leaking.

Metal Roofing

The most durable roof material is metal roofing. This type of roofing is incredibly long lasting and requires very little maintenance. They are extremely versatile and can be made to resemble a wide variety of styles from traditional tiles to a modern painted finish. The only disadvantage with this product is that it does tend to be quite expensive when compared with other types of shingles or tiles.

Clay Tiles

A relatively new product on the market has been clay tile roofs. These retro style shingles which look like traditional asphalt shingle roofs but have an entirely different composition. Instead of being made of asphalt, clay tiles are made from clay and a mixture of other materials. They require little maintenance, offer ample insulation for a home's interior, and also come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes designed to mimic different shingles or tiles which increases curb appeal. The main disadvantage with this type of roof is that it does not stand up well against extreme weather conditions which can make them quite expensive to maintain over time.
